Whatcha doin tonight?

I'm in Chicago and speaking today at 5 p.m. (Central time) before the Hyde Park Historical Society. The subject is the neighborhood of my childhood, Hyde Park in 1948, as well as quite a few other Chicago locales -- Bronzeville, Maxwell Street, Riverview to mention a few, plus lots of rides on the El.

They're all venues in my novel TO LOVE MERCY, Book 1 of my "Chicago Trilogy." The novel (and the entire Trilogy) comprises a tale of Blacks and Whites, Christians and Jews, how children view the world, conflict and forgiveness ... and Chicago at mid century, a great city going up in flames.

P.S. Yes, back in Chicago at last! It's my first real visit to my hometown since before covid. I spent yesterday with dear friend Judy Thornber reliving the past. We drove through all our old stomping grounds plus many other Chicago places, from the Gold Coast to dismal stretches of the bombed-out South Side. (The Gold Coast was kinda dismal too, truth to tell. The so-called Miracle Mile was peppered with vacancies, the after-effect of covid. That may be a story for another posting.)

We had lunch on the U of C campus at the Quadrangle Club, first time I've set foot in those hallowed halls, then stopped in at the Oriental Institute -- now politically-correctly renamed the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures Museum. But most of the displays still said "Oriental Institute."
