And now for something (a bit) different

Our son Sam is directing a play, "72 Miles To Go," a story of immigration, deportation, heartbreak and hope. The play first opened on Broadway (the Roundabout Theatre) and was a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize.

Sam, a graduate of NYU's celebrated Tisch School of the Arts, has a dream of bringing this torn-from-the-headlines work to his White, Brown and Native Peoples neighbors in the small northern New Mexico town (Taos) where he lives. But doing so requires him to spend weeks away from his work as an actor and photographer -- and the small honorarium he receives far from covers his living costs.

That's why I've created a GoFundMe for him. I'm hoping to raise $5,000 to get him over the hump.

P.S. Since this post isn't my usual stuff -- personal rather than regarding my novels -- I'll add another personal note: On Sept. 2, I get a new left knee to replace the now-near-useless one I was born with.

It isn't my first rodeo -- far from it. My right knee was replaced 15 years ago; my right shoulder in 2019; and my left shoulder last year.

None of that has slowed me down. I was still playing tennis up to a few weeks ago, and I hope to be hitting balls again in December.
